The man who climbed a mountain and rode down a hill. From Zurich to Viena

Dear friends, the old Europe could be still young. As you know, I am riding it by segments. I parked my bike at the Zurich airport during the working week days, and went back to pick her up last weekend. The weather was warm but the French controller were on a strike, so I was held up in Barcelona waiting those motherfuckers give up their protest.

Fron Zurich I visited another tiny country, Liechtenstein, which seems to live on selling small souvenires and an even more deep obscure bank system than its neighbour.

I went into Austria and the mountains grew up higher and higher in front of me. Ok, I said to myself, you´d better climb them till the top or die of lazyness on a fat big chair as the Homer Simpson you have inside.

Lakes, rocks, stones, beautiness. Life, motorbikes, happyness. Snitzels, apple struddels, beer and sausages. The Austrian way of warming up the heart.

Lagos, rocas, piedras, belleza. Vida, motos, felicidad.

Then I got Salzburg, the great old city where Mozart composed his master pieces. All the buildings has a story to tell. You should listen it carefully.

Just in case I could not hear it properly, I looked for a mate. Müller, a german hippy who was walking around barefoot, helped me recording the video for www.exploramoto.com meanwhile I was listening the city music.

But when we split, I was about to die in the cable car which goes up the castle. The japanese mutants were going to eat me like in a manga comic.

Fortunately, I was able to get away going East following the Danub valley, which is green, hilly and full of hungry mosquitoes.

Hasta la semana que viene. Till next week.

Meeting friends II (Swiss trip)

I met Pascal and Arja in Istambul when I was heading Middle East coming from Central Asia. They were coming from Australia on a R1200 GS called Francois. They had been in exotic countries like Nepal, India, Pakistan and Iran and were heading Europe till arrive to Oslo. Then, they were going to stablish in Nyon, near Geneve. I promised myself to visit them as soon as I could. Now it has been the time. I arrived Nyon late in the evening and the first thing we did was changing Francois rear tyre on the road. My bike also needed help because I had my first punchure. Pascal fixed. Who needs mechanichs when one has survived riding in India?

The second thing we did was drinking gallons of beer and wine while talking about trips, motorbikes and trips.

The following day we rode around the leman lake among hills and villages as Montreux. It was cloduy and the road was slippery but we reached without any problem the high mountains than sourronds Interlaken. But there were herds of musicians in disguise. It was some kind of festival there. They were not very happy because it was pouring cats and dogs and was midd of June. Too many sad musicians and too less free rooms for us, so we left to Lauterbrunnen, where we slept at the Jungfrau campingsite by a very reasonable price. Again, we were about to finish all the Chianty wine they had.

The following morning we rode to Grindenwald, where the fog and the snow were still there and split at Interlaken.

They went back to Nyon and I rode to Luzern, Schwyz and Zurich by the shore of its lake. Then I saw a ferry and decided to cross the Lake because the field is always greener at the other side of the fence. And drier too. At Meilen was not raining.

Zurich is a nice, clean and quiet city.

But sometimes there are not getaway so I came across to a narrow street with high stair at the end. I said to me: Ok, go ahead.

Zurich is full of antiquaries and art stores. I am not a collector but I saw something really amazing. A RAF pilot helmet from the 50s. I bought it thinking the whole weekend had been not to expensive.

But then the tragedy happened. I saw a light flashing behind me and two blue siluetes in front. They were cops and I got the most expensive speed fine ever. But they were really nice.

Then to keep my temper I decided to leave the swiss perfection and headed to the Black Forest in Germmany where I could hid my self among the trees as a bold ngomo.

Meeting friends I (Olot-Orange)

This summer I am planning to ride Europe just in weekends. I will ride to a big city with an international airport connected to Barcelona by low cost flights. Then I will park the bike (there usually are free parking lots for motorcycles), fly back to my job and after few days of slavery get few more days of freedom riding to the next airport.

One of the best thing of travelling alone is getting friends along the way. A lone wolf rider is always open to people because no man is an island and every one needs other´s help.My first step was France. But before I wanted to meet a friend. Dave Clark is a british biker I met last summer in Budapest in Bikerscamp where he had arrived with two other good guys.He was riding a F800 GS and I was going to Ukrain on my Little Fat. We kept in touch and I think he realized how good are GS 1200 because after riding one in South Africa for a short time, he bought one. Furthermore, his 800 broke down in Italy when it was 8 months old (the damned fuel pump controler).

So when I decided to ride Europe I asked him what he was going to do this summer; he answered: "How about a good ride in Spain and France?", he replied. "That is good", I said, "you can take the ferry in Plymouth and be in Spain the following day. I did that two summers ago and the trip was easy. Then you should ride the purest, twisted and narrowest pyrenees roads till Olot, where we can meet to ride North".

So we did it. We met in the old town of Olot. He was accompanied by John, a great big boy, who used to be a armed cop till his wife forced him to quit and be a good carpenter. Better to knock on wood than on bad´s heads.

We slept in a cabin of a camping site in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa. I gave them as gift some local sausages and we rode to France by an amazing twisted road. The weather was cold and cloudy but our hearts were warm (and it was not because all the beer we had drunk last night)

We split near Carcassone. They wanted to cross the Milliau bridge and I wanted to climb de Vercors mountains.

Then I arrived the famous winery area of Cote du Rhone and I decided it was a good place to have night.

Spring trip to Catalonia

Every time I have to travel to Barcelona from Madrid is a big beautiful problem. The straightest way is the most boring trip one could imagine. So I always try to find a more interesting way to go.

Madrid and Barcelona are linked by a 700 km ugly motorway.

So last trip I took the longest way ever. I went to Cuenca, then Morella, where I had night and then I crossed the Matarranya river and got south Catalonia by small roads.
